Supporting Children in Their First 10 Years Through School and Community Partnerships

October 8, 2019 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

In this October 8, 2019 Emerging Models session, David Jacobson, Ph.D., of Education Development Center delivered a presentation on the First 10 model, sharing information that he uncovered in his examination of collaborations between schools, school districts and the early learning and family support fields designed to improve teaching, learning and care during the first decade of children’s lives. He introduced participants to the two types of First 10 initiatives:

  1. First 10 School Hubs, where a single elementary school anchors efforts to provide direct support to families while collaborating with nearby early childhood providers; and
  2. First 10 Community Partnerships, which bring together multiple elementary schools, school district leaders and early childhood programs to improve the quality and coordination of early childhood education and care throughout a geographic area.

Leaders in two CGLR communities — Cris Anderson Lopez from Omaha, Nebraska, and Brooke Chilton-Timmons from Multnomah County, Oregon — shared how they are implementing this collaborative approach with schools in their communities to serve as hubs to engage and support children and families across the early years and early grades continuum.
