Research shows that ensuring students feel emotionally and physically safe in their school environment is necessary before efforts to improve instructional practices can be effective. Given escalating concerns about bullying, school violence, deportation, and more, many education leaders are recognizing the need to nurture a sense of safety — not just by “hardening” schools through increased security and active shooter drills — but also by creating a culture of trust and safety among students, teachers, and families. Join this session to learn from experts on how to create a “safe space” at school and establish environments of trust and belonging in school buildings — for students, families, and educators — in ways that can get upstream of behaviors that put young learners at risk.
