How United Way of Delaware Aims to Close the Literacy Gap During Out-of-School Time
Learn from Ebony Brown, MHA, Sr. Director of Student Success, United Way of Delaware who works with various out of school time partners across the state to implement literacy support services powered by BookNook. BookNook is an online learning platform designed to enhance K-8 literacy skills through one-on-one and small-group guided reading instruction and high-impact tutoring. UWDE has invested in this platform since the Summer of 2022. It is currently being used by 14 organizations across 38 sites across the state. Currently, 1,000 students are enrolled in BookNook, and registration numbers are increasing as we prepare for summer programming.

Health, Wellness, and Literacy
The panel will highlight the work of several organizations in Chicago working on health research, health outcomes, wellness and training. The individuals leading this work will discuss the connection of community literacy to positive outcomes, trust building and true partnerships with schools and community organizations. Instead of focusing on deficit perspectives such as pandemic related learning loss and objective measures of reading achievement. The Social Determinants of Health that exacerbated the spread of COVID were already harmful to vulnerable and communities who are and continue to suffer from disinvestment. Schools are often contentious spaces where the policies and agendas created are typically detached from the most important people impacted–families and communities. We, of course, recognize that all spaces are impacted by the aforementioned forces.
