Matthew J. Brewster is Director of Instructional Staff Development for the Newark Board of Education, in Newark, New Jersey. He is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the professional growth and development of the teachers and administrators in all of Newark’s 64 schools. As a member of the Executive Staff, Matthew works under the direction of the Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent of Schools to ensure alignment and fidelity to the district’s strategic plan, and serves as a liaison between central office and local institutions of higher learning and community-based organizations. Additionally, he facilitates the work of several internationally renowned researchers and specialists as they bring their expertise to bear in support of the district’s improvement efforts. His most recent projects are focused on summer learning, the principal pipeline, ensuring equity across the district, and the development of strategies to develop anti-racist teachers and school leaders. Matthew began his career teaching elementary and middle school in Newark and worked as a supervisor, vice principal and principal prior to taking on numerous central office roles. He is an adjunct professor in Educational Leadership at the university level, and serves as a mentor for new administrators in the State of New Jersey’s Leaders To Leaders Program. Matthew earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Morehouse College and Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from New York University.
