United Way of South Central Michigan

Chris Sargent is dedicated to helping children and families, as demonstrated by his 24 years in the nonprofit sector. His work has consistently focused on reducing and eliminating economic and racial disparities through a strong commitment to values.
Before taking the helm at United Way of South Central Michigan—a newly merged United Way organization representing the legacy communities of Battle Creek/Kalamazoo, Lansing, and Jackson, Michigan, as of April 2022—Chris gained experience with multiple United Way organizations of varying sizes and held numerous leadership roles. He received his bachelor’s degree in Biology, Environmental Science, and Business from Alma College.

He currently serves as the President and Executive Officer of United Way of South Central Michigan. Previously, he held the positions of Chief Operating Officer and then President and CEO at United Way of the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo Region, where he served for ten years. Prior to that, he worked at United Way of Greater Battle Creek for eight years, where he served in several roles including Resource Development Consultant, Vice President of Resource Development, and President and CEO. His earlier experience includes three and a half years with Heart of West Michigan United Way, where he worked as an Annual Campaign Associate and Assistant Campaign Director.

In addition to his United Way experience, Chris has held leadership roles in other nonprofit organizations. He served as Director of Resource Development for Michigan United Conservation Clubs in Lansing, Michigan, for two years, and as Capital Campaign Director for the Cheff Center in Augusta, Michigan, for one year.
Alongside his nonprofit work, Chris has also had a successful career in real estate, working as a realtor with RE/MAX Perrett and Troxel Realty, both located in Battle Creek.

Chris is actively involved on national, state, and local boards, including the United Way Worldwide Network Advisory Council (NAC). He has also served on Michigan 2-1-1 and participated in a number of regional collaborations.

He and his wife of 24 years, Kimberly, live in the Battle Creek area, where they enjoy spending time with their three children and seven grandchildren.
