In an effort to limit pandemic-precipitated learning loss, federal leaders established the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) Fund, investing $190 billion in K–12 education. State Education Agencies were able to reserve up to 10% to support relief efforts, investing largely in tutoring and accelerated learning ($4.4B), out-of-school time and extended learning ($3B), school personnel ($1.5B), curriculum and instruction ($1.4B), and digital connectivity and remote learning ($1.2B). All these strategies have proven effective, but the funding supporting these efforts ended on September 30. States are now facing a January 28, 2025, deadline to liquidate the grant before funds must be returned. CGLR is thrilled to present a special rebroadcast of a session from September that featured a panel of chief state school officers. During the session, they take stock of their investments and discuss what is working, the results they have achieved and what they have learned. They explore opportunities to sustain and advance the initiatives as they chart a plan for shifting resources and accelerating learning recovery post-ESSER.
